ARC Technology is developing pulse generators for extremely compact geometries requiring megawatts of power and milliJoule to Joule of total energy. These devices are to be constructed with surface mount components and circuit board fabrication techniques to minimize volume, cost, and production time. Clearly, the components in these circuits are operating well beyond their design specifications. Therefore, this paper examines the energy storage and peak power capabilities of various surface...

Semi-insulating Silicon Carbide (SiC) is an attractive material to use to construct high voltage, compact, photoconducting semiconductor switches (PCSS) due to its large bandgap, high critical electric field strength, high electron saturation velocity, and high thermal conductivity. The critical field strength of 3 MV/cm of 6H-SiC makes it particularly attractive for compact, high voltage, fast switching applications such as a Dielectric Wall Accelerator (DWA). To realize the benefits of the...

An improved photon-emission-microscope (PEM) instrumentation system has been developed for use in diagnosing failure conditions in semiconductor devices, including complex integrated circuits. This system is designed primarily to image areas that emit photons, at wavelengths from 400 to 1,100 nm, associated with device failures caused by leakage of electric current through SiO2 and other dielectric materials used in multilayer semiconductor structures. In addition, the system is sensitive...

This thesis points out the main problems consisting in general education in higher education institutions (HEIs) of China mainland. General education needs to be further improved and so does the quality of general education curriculum. The faculty construction should be more reasonable; the teaching administration models and the evaluation system should also be perfected. This thesis is also aimed to put forward the countermeasures: to pay more attention to general education, improve the...

The Pilot Weather Advisor (PWA) system is an automated satellite radio-broadcasting system that provides nearly real-time weather data to pilots of aircraft in flight anywhere in the continental United States. The system was designed to enhance safety in two distinct ways: First, the automated receipt of information would relieve the pilot of the time-consuming and distracting task of obtaining weather information via voice communication with ground stations. Second, the presentation of the...

"Micro-CPI" (wherein "CPI" signifies "cloud-particle imager") is the name of a small, lightweight electronic camera that has been proposed for use in research on clouds. It would acquire and digitize high-resolution (3- m-pixel) images of ice particles and water drops at a rate up to 1,000 particles (and/or drops) per second.

Two documents discuss improvements in traps for removing noncondensable gases (e.g., air) from heat-transfer liquids (e.g., water) in spacecraft cooling systems. Noncondensable gases must be removed because they can interfere with operation. A typical trap includes a cylindrical hydrophobic membrane inside a cylindrical hydrophilic membrane, all surrounded by an outer cylindrical impermeable shell. The input mixture of gas bubbles and liquid flows into the annular volume between the membranes....

An examination of the theory, history, and doctrine of counterinsurgency operations is conducted to develop a general framework of an insurgency. An understanding of the general insurgency framework is then used to develop an operational design for counterinsurgency campaigns that applies logical lines of operations that are linked to the strategic end state. This framework makes it possible to develop the theory that to be useful, measures of effectiveness must contain certain characteristics....

This paper reports the effects of program characteristics and faculty activities on students' experiences and, ultimately, the development of students' analytical and group skills. Data come from nationally representative samples of 4,330 seniors, 1,243 faculty members, and 147 engineering program chairs on 39 campuses nationwide. Findings indicate that program characteristics and faculty behaviors and values have significant, if relatively small and largely indirect, effects on student...

Somatostatin (SST) is a peptide hormone implicated in the growth and progression of cancers and SSTR2 is the predominant receptor subtype expressed in breast cancer. We hope to study the pattern of expression and clinical significance of SSTR2 levels in breast cancer. To this end, we have developed an algorithm called AQUA that can assess protein expression on tissue microarrays (TMA) based on molecular co-localization techniques. Our results show that SSTR2 is variably expressed in a large...

Fifteen to 20% of women with initial DCIS subsequently manifest invasive breast carcinoma. At present, there is no real means to predict which patients will undergo this disease progression and recurrence. The purpose of this IDEA, DOD award is to determine whether hypermethylation of the AP-2alpha, and other genes, may identify those DCIS lesions at high risk for recurrence as invasive breast carcinoma. The idea was based on a small initial study (15 samples) where we found only 20% of DCIS...

The purpose of this paper is to develop a model to maximize the efficiency with which satellite communications (SATCOM) resources are used. The paper begins by presenting background information on the problem, including the utility of SATCOM, a description of how SATCOM works and identifying SATCOM systems in use. The paper then examines the current process for assigning SATCOM resources and identifies a shortcoming that may be improved by the model presented. Once the problem is fully...

A basis set expansion is used to determine the character of the surface currents as the system is driven at a particular resonance frequency. Surface current densities and magnetic moments corresponding to those currents are calculated. It is shown that...

Earthquake occurrence in nature is thought to result from correlated elastic stresses, leading to clustering in space and time. We show that occurrence of major earthquakes in California correlates with time intervals when fluctuations in small earthquakes are suppressed relative to the long term average. We estimate a probability of less than 1% that this coincidence is due to random clustering.
